Molycop's Chile operations receive double recognition at awards night

Chile’s Ministry of Environment has honoured Molycop's Chilean operations for quantifying and reporting their greenhouse gas emissions for 2022 and 2023.

Key Facts

  • Molycop was recognised for its commitment to sustainability by Chile’s Ministry of the Environment as part of the Huella Chile Program.
  • The award honours Molycop for managing its Greenhouse Gas emissions in Chile during 2022 and 2023.
  • Molycop has also contributed to the Product Carbon Footprint pilot program as part of its commitment to environmental responsibility.
As part of the Huella Chile Program, the Ministry of Environment (MMA) has honoured Molycop's Chilean operations for quantifying and reporting their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for 2022 and 2023. Additionally, Molycop has been recognised for participating in the pilot program and implementing the Product/Service Carbon Footprint (HCP) measurement this year.
The award ceremony took place at the Chile Carbon Forum, where 351 companies were recognised for their efforts from the second quarter of 2023 through to August. These companies are collaborating to help Chile achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 by quantifying, reducing and neutralising their emissions.

Molycop has been part of the program since 2018, implementing the registration, monitoring and evaluation of its carbon footprint by the Chilean standard NCh-ISO 14064:2019.

Commitment to sustainability

Molycop’s new distinction solidifies the company's commitment to sustainability and reaffirms its dedication to environmental responsibility.

Andrés Mellado, Deputy Sustainability Manager of Molycop's Chilean operations, highlighted the company's dedication and responsibility:

We are proud to play an active role in managing greenhouse gases at the national level, especially in the mining sector. Our commitment to sustainability drives us to implement responsible practices that benefit our organisation and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future for the entire industry.

Pilot program for decarbonisation in mining

Two new projects were introduced during the event. One of them, developed by the MMA, Codelco and Corporación Alta Ley, focuses on mining companies and proposes a solution that standardises and simplifies the calculation, reporting and verification of the HCP.

Molycop was among the organisations that participated in the pilot phase of this initiative. The Sustainability team engaged in training and educational sessions to prepare for the sector's new sustainability requirements.

This progress will enable mining companies to better manage Scope 3 emissions in their corporate inventories. By providing verified, local GHG emission factors supplied by key suppliers, companies can manage their emissions more accurately and effectively across their entire value chain.

Setting a standard for others to follow

Molycop's operations in Chile continue to set a high standard for environmental responsibility within the mining sector. By staying at the forefront of sustainability initiatives like the Huella Chile Program and the Product Carbon Footprint pilot, Molycop is committed to contributing to Chile's broader environmental goals.

The company's ongoing efforts reduce its environmental impact and serve as a model for others in the mining sector.
